Chapter 7: Fiery Disaster

The next morning, Bree took her coffee break extra early on the side porch overlooking the east forty acres. It no longer felt like an invasion of her privacy if Matt caught sight of her in the filmy short-sleeved hoodie and yoga pants she’d just finished stretching out in. No running yet, per doctor’s orders. She seriously couldn’t wait to get back to her morning jogs and trail rides. In addition to sipping coffee, she liked to start her mornings by breaking a sweat and pumping endorphins. Exercise always made her feel better for the rest of the day.

A sense of satisfaction crept over her at the knowledge that the two enormous breakfast ring casseroles she’d cooked the evening before were slowly heating in the oven. The scent of yeast from the croissants wafted through the window she’d left cracked for the fresh air while she was working. Combined with the warm swirl of almond coffee fumes, it was a heavenly smell, one that made her feel better than she had since the afternoon of her nightmarish accident. Nearly one hundred percent back to her old self. Or not.

After what had happened between her and Matt yesterday, she was pretty sure some things in her life were never going back to the way they were. She smiled as she took another sip of coffee, reliving the magic of being in his embrace. In the next moment, however, her rosy memories were marred by the fury of having to watch his ex march up the back porch stairs and pretend like she had the right to kick him aside and take him back at will. Like she owned him or something.

Bree closed her eyes against the flash of the massive diamond she’d been waving around. Gosh, but Matt didn’t hold back! She didn’t want to even think about how much a stone like that must’ve cost him — on a soldier’s salary, no less.

A part of her was worried that she’d kissed him too soon. Yesterday was only two weeks past the day he was supposed to get married. But the moment had felt right. More importantly, he’d kissed her back.

Which didn’t keep her from sensing the thick waves of sadness coursing through him. And regret. And the fear of making another mistake. Sentiments she understood all too well. Yeah, he was attracted to her, but she needed to protect what was happening between them with everything she had in her. Like her, he needed time to nurse his wounds. To heal. To rebuild. And then. Only then. Maybe.

She closed her eyes as she leaned her head against one of the porch columns, breathing in the peace of the morning and soaking in the warmth of the first rays breaking over the horizon. This was why she loved this particular spot so much. It was where she got to wake up with the day. Where she got to experience a new beginning with each and every sunrise.

“Hey, you.”
